What is survival?
Survival means different things to different people. It may mean surviving a post-apocalyptic world where everything we currently know has been destroyed. It may mean living through a hurricane. It may mean making our way through a blizzard to a farmhouse down the road. It may mean finding enough money to buy our children food for tomorrow. Survival is not ONE thing! Each person must look at what they are ‘preparing’ for! Preparing may mean something as small as carrying a cell phone and extra cash for a jaunt across town. It may mean carrying enough personal items to get them to a safe location a few blocks from work. It may mean have a BOB prepared for a three day camp out when they get stuck in the back country. It may mean having a BOV filled with gas and all the gear loaded to make a run for the retreat. It depends upon what you expect to happen to you. We have to consider the duration we are preparing for as well. Toting a 1911 stoked with HP’s may help you survive a mugging. But you may desire a fully stocked armory for the invading bands of gangs after TEOTWAWKI. Along the same lines you may want a couple of MRE’s in your truck in case you get stuck in a snow drift. Or you may want a full larder and enough food to feed your family for 18 months in case the economy collapses. Some survival situations may last minutes to hours, while others may end up lasting years! You may have to make the preparations for an individual or for an entire group. Are you single or married with a family? This may influence your thinking more than you realize. You will want to protect your family first, but you can’t do that when you are dead, hence you may want to avoid fights. If you are a loner, going down in a blaze of glory may seem honorable. Each person is unique in his situation. Survival is a VAST world of varying situations. You need to dig down deep inside yourself and find out what YOU are trying to prepare for. Nobody can tell YOU what you need to do. You can get an idea then ask about varying situations, and even then, you’ll recieve 101 different responses for the same question. |
